We’re introduced to popular suburban teen Mari Collingwood (Sandra Peabody) who’s celebrating her 17th birthday. Much to her parent’s dismay, Mari has plans to attend a rock concert in the city with her friend Phyllis (Lucy Grantham). Her parents, Estelle and John, express their concern about her friendship with Phyllis but let her go and give her a peace symbol necklace. Before the concert, Mari and Phyllis encounter Junior while trying to buy marijuana. He leads them to an apartment where they are trapped by the criminals.

The Last House on the Left has left its mark on horror history. There’s no doubt that the film influenced future films. Echoes of this film can be seen in Grindhouse (2007) and especially Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects (2005). You can see the influence of this film in how the homicidal Firefly family interacts with each other and with their victims. The story is also based on a true incident, we're told at the beginning of the movie, but I have my doubts; I think the producers may simply be trying one of those "only the names have been changed" capers. What does come through in "Last House on the Left" is a powerful narrative, told so directly and strongly that the audience (mostly in the mood for just another good old exploitation film) was rocked back on its psychic heels.

The deputy recalls another time when the man disappeared shortly before his collie gave birth to a litter of puppies. This scene reminded me of Zombie’s “chicken lover” in The Devil’s Rejects. One scene in Last House is very much like a scene in The Devil’s Rejects. In The Devil’s Rejects, The Firefly family holds a group of musicians hostage in a motel room.

Director

The film’s original titles were Night of Vengeance, Sex Crime of the Century, and Krug & Co. Just like with Chainsaw, the viewer is left to fill in the blanks. The most grotesque scene is a shot of one of the killers handling one of the girl’s intestines. Last House doesn’t have grotesque over-the-top kills.

Distributor Hallmark Releasing, in partnership with American International Pictures, gave him and Craven funding after the box office success of Cunningham's Together (1971). The movie spends a little time with them having conversations that would be typical for young women to have before heading off to the city for their concert. Each talks about their fantasies regarding members of a rock band that they’re about to see perform in the city over some drinks in the woods. There’s also some irreverent comic relief in Last House that can be seen in Zombie’s films. For example, there’s a scene where the sheriff and deputy are talking about a local man who recently disappeared from town with his pig. The sheriff says that the man wants to enter the pig into a contest.

The Last House on the Left was released in the United States on August 30, 1972. While the film initially received a polarizing reception from critics, it was highly profitable, grossing over $3 million at the domestic box office. The Last House on the Left is a cautionary tale of the abduction and torture of two teenage girls by a band of escaped convicts. All these two girls wanted was to attend a rock concert in the city.

Unsatisfied, the two worked on a remake, called Together. We’re introduced to the band of convicts who are hiding out in a dingy apartment after their escape. Krug (David A. Hess) takes the role of leader, his son, Junior (Marc Scheffler), the only one with a conscience, Fred “The Weasel” (Fred Lincoln), and Sadie (Jermaine Rain). "Last House on the Left" is a tough, bitter little sleeper of a movie that's about four times as good as you'd expect. There is a moment of such sheer and unexpected terror that it beats anything in the heart-in-the-mouth line since Alan Arkin jumped out of the darkness at Audrey Hepburn in "Wait Until Dark."

Estelle pretends to seduce Weasel, bites off his penis, and leaves him to bleed to death. John takes his shotgun and shoots at Krug and Sadie. Krug escapes into the living room and overpowers John before manipulating Junior into killing himself.

Later, when Junior is in the midst of heroin withdrawal, Estelle enters the bathroom to check on him and sees Mari's peace symbol necklace around his neck. She finds blood-soaked clothing in their luggage and overhears them talking about Mari's death and her disposal in a nearby lake. On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to attend a rock concert in the city. Attempting to score some drugs on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic Krug.

Phyllis tries to escape and reason with them, but she fails and is gang-raped. Meanwhile, Mari's unsuspecting parents prepare a surprise party for her. Craven cut the film numerous times for the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to rate it R. Internationally, the United Kingdom refused to certify the film for release, and while briefly released on home video in the 1980s, the "video nasty" scare led to the banning of the film until 2002.

While trying to purchase some marijuana, the two are led to their death at the hands of escaped fugitives. Many different versions of the film exist on various DVD and VHS releases struck from different cuts of the film, many of them from different countries. When fledgling director Wes Craven took this film to the MPAA, they labeled it with an "X" rating. Wanting an R for wider release, Craven went back and removed 10 minutes of footage.
